The setting in this drawing to me looks like four men fighting and a dog trying to help. Their faces are all covered up like if their hiding from something. The first man that I would describe is the black man that is next to the dog in the front with the green pants on one knee holding his hands up on guard striking the man across from him who is white with a pot on his head covering his face with a guard protecting his face on the left side wearing a red shirt that has been thrown on the right side. His boot is under his foot while the third guy is laying down protecting his face from harm’s way with a yellow shirt on and blue jeans. He looks as if his arm is broke the way he is positioned on the ground holding a knife in his hand that looks broken. However, the fourth man also in yellow but mustard yellow looks like the strongest man with big bold shoulders. With a red covering over his head holding a white covering over the third guy’s head with a piece of boarder that has been taken up from somewhere. The back ground in this portrait looks like an old baseball field. With an old bar or store in the background with the red and white lines. The wood in the back grounds could symbolize modern time due to the stairs that are on the lower left of the drawing. Also by the way the weapon where made usually a knife is sharp and isn’t made out of wood. This portrait is simple guys that are symbolizing fighting and/or a war and people in today’s society don’t use pots and or sheets to cover their face. So, this drawing had to be done in memory of something many years ago. Philip Guston (June 27, 1913- June, 7, 1980) a very well-known artist who is famous for his art work. This art work titled Gladiators. Is a drawing that was made to symbolize a time when the KKK was around or an era that had occurred many years.
This work of art makes me feel sad because I look at the portrait and think about stories that I have heard over the years about that era when there where blacks and whites fighting against one another and there wasn’t any unity between people and every one was equal to each other so that kind of makes me feel sad that it took many years of fighting and persistence for people to get equal rights and still today things aren’t just between certain cultures.
